For many experienced nurses across Northern Ireland, from Derry to Belfast, the traditional permanent roles no longer provide the balance or flexibility they need. Long shifts, rigid schedules, and limited autonomy can lead to burnout. But there’s good news, agency nursing offers a refreshing alternative. With more freedom, higher pay, and varied experiences, it’s no surprise that many nurses are choosing to make the switch.

In this blog post, we’ll walk you through exactly how to transition from permanent employment to agency nursing in Northern Ireland, and why partnering with Leadcare Recruitment, a Tier 1 Approved Supplier to HSCNI Trusts, can make all the difference.

What Is Agency Nursing?

Agency nursing allows qualified nurses to work on a flexible, shift-by-shift basis for a range of healthcare facilities. Instead of being employed directly by a hospital or trust, you work through an agency, like Leadcare Recruitment, which matches you with available shifts or contracts.

You choose when you work, where you work, and how often. Agency nurses in Northern Ireland typically support:

  • Belfast Trust
  • Northern Trust
  • South Eastern Trust
  • Southern Trust
  • Western Trust

With Leadcare’s support, you can tailor your schedule to your lifestyle, whether you prefer consistent shifts in one location or want to try different placements across the country.

The Key Benefits of Agency Nursing

Switching to agency work offers many advantages for experienced nurses. Here are some of the most compelling:

  1. Flexibility & Freedom – You control your shifts, ideal if you’re managing family life, studying, or just want more “you” time.
  2. Higher Pay Rates – Agency roles often offer significantly better hourly rates than standard permanent contracts. At Leadcare, we ensure competitive, fair pay for all our nurses.
  3. Work-Life Balance – Enjoy your profession without sacrificing your personal life. Choose to work weekends or avoid them altogether—it’s up to you.
  4. Variety of Clinical Experience – Working in different environments keeps your skills sharp and your days interesting. You’ll gain exposure to new teams, equipment, and patient types.
  5. Opportunities to Travel – You can accept shifts in various parts of Northern Ireland, from city hospitals in Belfast to quieter rural settings around Derry.

How to Switch from Permanent to Agency Nursing

If you’re considering moving from a permanent nursing role to agency work, you’re likely wondering: “What’s the process actually like?” At Leadcare Recruitment, we’ve created a seamless registration journey that’s supportive, flexible, and designed with busy nurses in mind. Here’s exactly what to expect:

  1. Online Application

Your journey starts with a simple, user-friendly online application form available on our website. If you prefer a paper format, we also offer a downloadable PDF version that can be emailed or posted back to us.

  1. Follow-Up Phone Call

Once we’ve received your application, a friendly member of our team will give you a call. We’ll talk about your skills, experience, preferred locations, and areas of practice. We’ll also walk you through the documentation needed, such as:

  • Right to Work in the UK check
  • NMC registration
  • Vaccination history
  1. Mandatory Training

All nurses must provide evidence of Mandatory Training before accepting shifts. You can upload this via our dedicated app, where you can also manage availability, accept bookings, and submit timesheets digitally.

If you need to update your training, we provide free access to our online training platform so you can complete any required modules at your own pace.

  1. Face-to-Face Interview (Remote Available)

Every nurse joining Leadcare will complete a comprehensive interview, which can be done over video call for convenience. It’s a chance for us to learn more about your qualifications, preferences, and goals, and for you to learn more about us! We also review your employment history and career aspirations so we can match you with the most suitable shifts.

  1. Compliance Checks

Compliance and safety are essential at Leadcare Recruitment. We’ll request at least two references, including one from a managerial-level supervisor (Band 6 or 7). Please note: we no longer accept references from Band 5 nurses.

You’ll also undergo an Enhanced Access NI Check, ensuring we maintain high standards of safety and professionalism in every placement.

  1. Joining the Agency

Once all steps are complete and references are returned, you’ll officially become a Leadcare nurse. We’ll provide:

  • Your ID badge and uniform.
  • Access to our Leadcare app for booking shifts and tracking time.
  • A tailored online induction to prepare you for your first shift.

Hear from a Leadcare Nurse

“Many nurses know that when changing to a nursing agency, it can be very stressful and often a lengthy process. So when the time came for me to change to Leadcare, I was somewhat stressed, but now I can honestly say, I stressed over nothing. Dealing with Leadcare was much more different from other agencies because they had amazing communication skills. I was assigned a girl caller, Eimhear and I have to say she made the whole process seamless. She communicated with me on almost a daily basis and I still message her if I need to know something. Staff like this make the processes less daunting and are an asset to a company. Eimhear was a godsend for me. I've also had phone calls from Stephen, Paul and Karen and this has made me feel like I am a team member again. Thank you for everything Team Leadcare.”
