What does Manual Handling and Basic Life Support (BLS) Training Involve?

Manual Handling Training

Leadcare Recruitment’s in-house training instructor delivering Manual Handling Training to nurses and healthcare assistants in Northern Ireland.

Leadcare’s Manual Handling training equips HCAs and nurses in Northern Ireland how to safely move and support patients while reducing the risk of injury to both themselves and those in their care.

The training typically involves a combination of theory and practical instruction, covering safe lifting techniques, body mechanics, risk assessment and the correct use of manual handling equipment such as hoists, slide sheets and transfer aids.

Manual handling training also focuses on patient dignity, communication and healthcare-specific scenarios such as bed mobility, transfers and assisted walking.

There will also be a practical competency assessment, and if completed successfully, a certificate will be issued.

Basic Life Support Training

Leadcare Recruitment’s in-house training instructor delivering Basic Life Support (BLS) Training to nurses and healthcare assistants in Northern Ireland.

Basic Life Support (BLS) training with Leadcare Recruitment teaches healthcare staff how to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest, choking and respiratory failure. This training also combines theory with practical instruction, covering life-saving techniques such as rescue breathing, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Basic Life Support training also focuses on rapid response, effective communication and maintaining patient safety until emergency medical help arrives.

A practical assessment will also take place, with healthcare staff practising on mannequins to demonstrate their ability, and if completed successfully, a training certificate will be issued.

Why Manual Handling and Basic Life Support Training is Important for Healthcare Staff in Northern Ireland

Manual handling training is essential for the safety of both nursing staff and patients in Northern Ireland. Using the incorrect manual handling technique can jeopardise patient safety and may result in acute or chronic back injury and musculoskeletal disorders for the nurse or healthcare assistant themselves, which can be debilitating. Therefore, by becoming certified in Manual Handling, healthcare staff can have peace of mind that they can work safely and compliantly with patients, and do what’s best for their own health and the health of the patient.

As well as that, Basic Life Support training can become vital if the nurse or healthcare assistant finds themselves in an emergency response situation, such as if a patient goes into cardiac arrest or chokes. In which case, an effective and rapid response is imperative to save a patient’s life. By partaking in Basic Life Support training, nurses and healthcare assistants in Northern Ireland will have all the skills and knowledge necessary to save patient lives should they need to.
